Balding? Here Are Some Stats on Baldness That Might Surprise You...

You’ve noticed that your hair is starting to thin out on top.

Maybe you’ve been seeing the signs of male pattern baldness for a while — and you’re very worried. Or maybe you just noticed some hair in your sink for the first time — and you’re wondering what to do now.

Society’s response can be harsh — especially with the continuous messaging that baldness is a bad thing. Countless products (and even surgeries) will encourage you to “fix the problem” — and as a result, you might start to lose confidence. You might even feel judged, weak, and unattractive.

But... is that really the truth?

The reality may surprise you.

The Reality

Male pattern baldness is normal and healthy, and you’re definitely not alone. According to the American Hair Loss Association, about 66% of men will start to lose their hair by the age of 35 — and by age 55, 85% of men will have significant hair loss, with visibly thin or balding hair.

In a study on male baldness conducted by Barry University, researchers wanted to understand why baldness has survived and thrived throughout human evolution. The study asked people to rank a group of men — both bald and not — on a series of traits, including honesty, intelligence, and social status. The results showed that in general, people viewed bald men as more honest, intelligent, and socially dominant than men with hair. Overall, the study confirmed what researchers had speculated for years — baldness was historically beneficial because it increased a man’s perceived non-threatening social dominance.
